MoorRundwanderweg Mosbrucher Weiher
Description
Along the loop trail, four information stations provide details about the maar, its formation, and the species that live here.
What makes the Eifel moors unique is their volcanic origin. Some are located in the characteristic circular maars, which silted up over the course of millennia and now serve as kettle moors, providing a habitat for rare plants and animals. One of these special areas is the Mosbrucher Weiher. The peat bog is situated in a massive crater where, as a result of the silting up of the former maar lake, a transitional bog up to 6 meters thick—with some characteristics of a raised bog—has formed. (EU LIFE Project “Moor”)
The circular hiking trail runs for approximately 3 km along the bog. Four information stations provide details about the bog’s formation and the unique species of flora and fauna that live here. The entire area is a nature reserve with exceptional biodiversity.
